The Grotto
The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother
Almost hidden away in Northeast Portland is a beautiful and peaceful sanctuary called The Grotto.
This 62-acre Catholic shrine and botanical garden dates back to 1924 when Fr. Ambrose Mayer pruchased the land from a railroad.
Fr. Mayer had promised God that if his mother recovered from serious illness following the birth of a young daughter, he, young Ambrose, would do something great for the Church when he grew up. His mother did recover and over the years the promise was not forgotten.
Admission to the lower level is free, but to see the real gem atop a towering stone bluff, you'll need to buy a token for the 11 story elevator ride to the top. It's well worth it, And The Grotto is supported solely by the proceeds of its gift shop and by donations.
